Breeding for diversity – political implications and new pathways for the future Organic Eprints
Andersen, Regine; Bocci, Riccardo; Howlett, Sally; Pearce, Bruce; Dunsire, Gaina; Rey, Frederic; Nuijten, E.; Andersen, Rikke Thomle; Pedersen, Tove Mariegaard; Miceli, F.; Slabe, Anamarija.
At present, around 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector, lacking important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. Populations with a high level of genetic diversity are promising for OA (organic agriculture) conditions due to their adaptation, resilience and performance stability in different environments. Organic farming will benefit from cultivars (populations, varieties) that can cope with multiple stresses such as weeds, diseases, pests, climate change and low nitrogen input from manure. In the COBRA project (Coordinating Organic Plant Breeding Activities for diversity), plant genetic diversity and its potential have been investigated from both an...

LIVESEED boosting organic seed and plant breeding across Europe Organic Eprints
Messmer, Monika; Schäfer, Freya; Raaijmakers, Maaike; Rey, Frédéric; Chable, Véronique; Nuijten, Edwin; Lammerts van Bueren, Edith; Mendes-Moreira, Pedro; Bocci, Riccardo; Drexler, Dora; Padel, Susanne; Zanoli, Raffaele; Fuss, Alexandra; Moeskops, Bram.
The European project LIVESEED (www.liveseed.eu) is based on the concept that cultivars adapted to organic systems are key for realizing the full potential of organic agriculture in Europe. LIVESEED will help to establish a level playing field in the organic seed market across Europe, improve the competitiveness of the organic seed and breeding sector, and encourage greater use of organic seeds by farmers. LIVESEED will improve guidelines for cultivar testing and strategies for ensuring seed health. It will develop innovative breeding approaches suited to organic farming. Finally, it will investigate socio-economic aspects relating to the use and production of organic seed and their interaction with relevant (EU) regulations. The LIVESEED project (2017 –...

Organic agriculture and sustainable practices: towards a typology of innovative farmers Organic Eprints
Dinis, Isabel; Ortolani, Livia; Bocci, Riccardo; Brites, Claudia.
This paper aims to identify the factors that influence the choice of organic farmers to innovate for more sustainable practices that go beyond the strict limits imposed by the certification. Using survey data collected from 352 Italian and Portuguese certified organic farmers, a probabilistic model was estimated. The results show that farmers, in particular women, longest engaged in organic farming are more likely to adopt sustainable practices. They also indicate that farm size, landownership, the existence of some types of complementary activities and the sources of information used by farmers affect the adoption of such practices.

The organic seed regulations framework in Europe – current status and recommendations for future development Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Bocci, Riccardo; Hitchings, Roger; Howlett, S. A.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Pautasso, Marco; Raaijmakers, M; Rey, F; Stubsgaard, Anke; Weinhappel, M.; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Winkler, Louisa; Wolfe, M S.
Organic agriculture regulations, in particular European regulation EC 889/2008, prescribe the use of organically produced seed. For many cultivated plants, however, organic seed is often not available. This is mainly because investment in organic plant breeding and seed production has been low in the past. To bridge the gap between organic seed supply and demand, national and European regulations define certain circumstances under which organic producers are permitted to use non-organically produced seed. While the organic sector currently depends on these concessions, they also threaten to impede a further increase in the demand for organic seed, thereby potentially restraining present and future investment in organic seed production and plant breeding....

THE SEED SOURCES OF ORGANIC FARMERS IN ITALY Organic Eprints
Bocci, Riccardo; Ortolani, Livia; Micheloni, Cristina.
This paper presents the result of the survey done in 2010 by AIAB on the seed sources in Organic Agriculture (OA) in Italy. The aim of this work is to better understand and clarify the relationships between the formal and informal seed system (Almekinders and Louwaars, 2000) and quantify the role of the latter in OA. In a time where the choice of the varieties to grow will be in the hands of public institutions or seed industries (GRAIN, 2008), it is pivotal to check the needs of Organic farmers and the seed they are sowing. The questions addressed were: a. Are Organic farmers still self-producing seeds? b. Are they using only varieties listed in Official National Catalogue? c. What is the role of old varieties not listed anymore or local varieties in...
